CONCEPT

Rice is at the heart of the Japanese.
However, the country’s shrinking and graying farming population has become a grave problem.
A recent study revealed that the average age of farmers is 67, and young farmers under 30 account for less than 3%.

“Recruiting Rice” is a new project to help farmers find their successors.
People who buy the rice can join free agricultural tours, such as rice planting and harvesting. Since the best advert for farmers is the tasty products they produce, rice itself was chosen as the media for the purpose of recruitment.

PRODUCT

“Recruiting Rice” is grown in Kurohone, Kiryu City, Gunma prefecture, an area ideal for growing rice – fresh clean water and high daily temperature variation. These conditions contribute to its attaining the nation’s highest score for taste.
However, the issue of succession is serous, due to the declining population of Kurohone, a depopulated village with just 2,700 people before it was absorbed by Kiryu in 2007.
